Is it really okay to put a betta fish in a small tank?
I’d like to get my first betta fish and I was surprised to see how small the tanks are for sale at the pet store. I know they come in tiny cups when you buy them and I have heard they live in puddles in the wild, but will the fish really be fine if I put it in a gallon tank?
From the Pet Stores point of view, those small, inadequate cups are convenient. Males cannot be housed together, and what store would pay to have 30 extra tanks made to house their bettas? In many cases you will see that the water in those betta cups is tinted blue because it is medicated- it would not be necessary to medicate these fish were they not in stressful situations and indeed many do show signs of being stressed.
Many Tanks For Sale are not suitable for bettas. “Gimmick” tanks are made by manufacturers who know little about the fish they picture on the box.
Bettas originate from Southeast Asia. They do not live in puddles, but PADDIES. There is a dry season which they have evolved to survive, but they are not meant to be subjected to harsh conditions for the entirety of their lives.
-Bettas commonly sold are genetically removed from their ancestors. Poor water quality causes fin rot, bacterial infections, and even parasitic infections. A filter is more than worth it.
-Bettas are Tropical Fish and their temperature needs to be maintained between 78F-82F.
Please, if you want to bring a betta into your home, give him about a 5 gallon Aquarium with a gentle filter, and an aquarium heater. The price is worth it to have a healthy fish that will be with you for 5-7 years.
