How to Choose a Fish Aquarium   by Dan Sulewski

There are many choices when it comes to finding an aquarium but breaking it down into three separate pieces will help anyone easily find an aquarium. The three questions you need to ask yourself are:
How much money do I have to spend? How big do I want it? What kind of fish do I want to keep in it? What do I want it to look like?

I tried putting these questions in order of importance but most likely you will have to keep bringing each one up as you search for your perfect aquarium and stand.

How Much Money to Spend
Aquariums come in all shapes (rectangle, circular, tall, short, narrow, wide) but the first question you need to ask yourself is what your overall budget is for the aquarium? There are a number of
affordable tanks are produced in bulk that you can buy for a pretty good price, but maybe you are on the other end of the spectrum and have over a thousand dollars to burn? In whatever situation you are in you can probably find an aquarium that can fit your budget. Just keep in mind that the more “custom” you go with a tank the more expensive it will be and that finding a fish tank to buy is only the beginning of the journey. Most of the time that is not the most expensive item you will be purchasing for your hobby when you consider all of the lighting, filter systems, and livestock that you will be purchasing for your tank as well!

How Big Do I want It?
The sky is the limit when it comes to possible fish aquarium sizes. The best thing to do is pick out a section of your house or apartment where you are considering placing your aquarium and take a couple measurements including the width and the depth. After you know how much room you have to work with and after considering how big you actually want your aquarium head over to a website such as http://www.aquariumdimensions.com – there you can find standard aquarium dimensions from all of the major aquarium brands. Go down the list until you find one that looks suitable to your situation and to your tastes. Then you have to decide if you want to order it online or if you want to go see it in person. Keep in mind as you are buying the aquarium that although it seems like more work to have a bigger aquarium a lot of the time those are more stable than smaller aquariums!

What Kind of Fish do I want to Keep In It?
After you have established The Fish Tank size the type of fish or other livestock you want to keep in it is a very important question. The biggest questium is whether you want saltwater or freshwater fish in your aquarium. There are a lot of factors to be considered in this decision but the biggest difference between freshwater and saltwater is that you typically need higher output lights and a more expensive filtration system when you go to a “full” reef tanks (with Fish And Corals) but it is not very much more expensive than a freshwater tank when you stick with fish only. The other main consideration you have to make is that if you have already chosen a tank size please realize that a large number of fish (i.e. tangs)will not be happy in a smaller size tank without enough room to swim so you must talk with your pet store before picking out a fish to make sure the tank you have is appropriate.

What do I want the tank to look like?
The final question really comes down to personal preference. After you have decided on the size, budget, and type of aquarium it’s really up to you to pick the type of aquarium. In general tanks either come as glass or acrylic, framed or frameless, curved or straight, wide or narrow, and tall or short. Really the sky is the limit, it will be a part of your place for a number of years and fish tanks can really be used as a decorative piece in your home if you choose a suitable aquarium to complement your existing decor.
