Thinking of starting small fish farming business, any ideas?
I’m a huge fish lover! I’ve found fish a passion since I was younger and loved/love taking care of mostly Tropical Fish (guppies, neon tetras, glofish, etc.) I’ve had experience with bigger fish as well such as goldfish, black Moor’s,etc. I’m takin some business classes in highschool right now but mostly in advertisment. I think I’d be succesfull in it because I think I would really be very intreseted in what I did and have had experience. Is there some advice I should now like if it really makes that much money, how much it would generally cost to start up the business, is it that hard to get your fish sold, etc. Thanks for the help.
I think it wouldn’t be a permanent career for me. Just some experience and something to help pay for college fees before going on to a different career maybe. With that, could I make decent money off this as more of a short term career? I am not in college currently so I could put my classes around the job time if needed probably.
I breed my swordtail and raise the fry because I enjoy the hobby. I take it small in scale (I wind up with a new batch of fry about every 3 months or so). Just the cost of frozen baby brine shrimp ($5 per package) is worth more than my swordtail (hybrid, common types). The local fish stores sell them for $2 to 3 each, and I could receive 1/2 value as store credit or 1/4 value as cash. So, a brood of 20 won’t bring in much money or credit as compared to the cost of operation, but it is better than nothing.
My peacock Cichlids, however, are worth much more. They’ve had two broods of fry in my experience, and I just sold off my largest group of males from the fry. 10 of them at a sexable size earned me $15 each in store credit. If I had insisted on cash instead of store credit, I could have had $75. I have more of them to be sold, but they will take more time to grow. Purebred species have a nice payoff, but so far it hasn’t covered my cost of expenses.
You can certainly profit, but it takes time to get going, and there’s no guarantee you will earn as much as you thought you might have (perhaps you start off with 50 fry and only 20 grow to be juvenile…)
Some other advice: Do as much research as you can. How many fry does a species typically produce? As the fry grow, how big of a tank will you need? Are they a species that fish stores are always looking for (and are willing to pay top dollar for), or are they something they never seem to run out of (and may not be interested in buying all of yours)? And have fun! It’s really great to watch your babies grow, and there is a healthy sense of pride behind raising your own fish to adulthood.
