Question about Aquariums / fish tanks?
I’m thinking about getting a 25-30 gallon fish tank. I haven’t decided if it’ll be a saltwater or freshwater Aquarium. Anyway, when I had fish as a kid (goldfish, Bettas), I just had ordinary fish tanks that you’d empty twice a week (can’t remember), clean manually, and put the fish back in once the water was clean.
Now there are tanks with filters. Does this mean less work is involved with cleaning? I can’t imagine dumping 30 gallons of water a few times a week and scrubbing a tank that size. What type of work is involved with tanks with filters?
You’d never dump a 30 gallon and refill it – that’s a good way to kill off your fish. Bettas and gold fish can handle this sometimes because they’re fairly hardy fish but when you dump a tank you’re killing off good bacteria (which take ammonia, nitrates and nitrites out of your water – these three things will kill your fish if they exceed certain levels).
I’d say start with a fresh water at the size mentioned – saltwater takes a bit more work but more importantly the fish are a lot easier to kill!
You’d need the tank, light, filter (of appropriate size), heater, and an additive to take chlorine out of your water.
To clean the tank you buy a siphon hose and take no more than 25% of your water out one or twice a month (depending on how dirty your fish are). It’s not really less work – it’s just a differnet kind of work. If you really want to cut the work load down you can buy siphon hoses that hook directly up to the kitchen sink (meaning to carrying buckets!).
Hope this helps!
